Biography

After completion of my doctoral studies in Renaissance history, I first worked in the State University of New York system and then at ��Ƶ since 2012. I have published a monograph and articles on Renaissance Rome and regularly present on neo-Latin literature in both Renaissance Italy and Spain. I have also served as president, vice president, and board member of the New York State Association of European Historians and I am a member of the Renaissance Society of America.

Research Interests

My research interests focus around the study of language and cultural contact. My primary regions of study are Paraguay, where much of the population is bilingual (to some degree) in both official languages Spanish and Guarani, and the United States, where I focus on speakers of Heritage Spanish in contact with English.

Dr. Manpreet Rai is an associate professor in Psychology at D’Youville University Buffalo, NY. Her research interests are in cognitive psychology, namely working memory and language processing, and cognitive biases. Additionally, she is interested in the science of sleep. Other research interests are in Teaching and Learning within the scholarship of teaching and learning. She loves working with and teaching for overall student success. In her spare time she loves exploring all things Buffalo from food, hiking trials and festivals. Family, faith and friends are very important to me.

My teaching interests include social, forensic, and clinical/counseling psychology. I have served as Psychology/��Ƶ Sciences Internship Coordinator since 2001. I am a licensed psychologist with interests in assessing and treating adjustment, anxiety, mood, substance use, sexual, and personality disorders. I have experience in individual, couples, and group therapy and using motivational interviewing. I'm an ardent advocate of holistic healthcare and a certified master trainer in TeamSTEPPS. In the community, I have coached miscellaneous youth sports across 4 decades and am the proud father of my sons, Josh and Jake, and grateful husband to my wife Lora.

I am originally from Western New York and moved to the Chicago land area for about 25 years before returning. While there I adopted two children. As a single adoptive mother who have special needs, I have devolved my time and energy to them. I view my students as an active learners of their own experiences and attempt to bring my own experiences into the classroom. I always seem to learn from my students as much as they learn for me.

Biography

Dr. Terrianne Schulte is an Associate Professor of History in the Department of Humanities and ��Ƶ Sciences at D’Youville University in Buffalo, New York. Specializing in American environmental and political history, her current research explores the life of Helen Dortch Longstreet, an advocate for environmental preservation and civil rights in the early twentieth century, who led an extraordinary campaign to save Tallulah Falls in the north Georgia mountains (known as the “Niagara of the South”). Dr. Schulte teaches courses on Environmental History, American Government, Civil War and Reconstruction, Founding the American Republic, and the History of Constitutional Law.

Biography

Dr. Julie Kirsch is co-author of Bioethics; Philosophical and Religious Perspectives (with Dr. Walter Sisto), and co-editor of Third-Person Self-Knowledge, Self-Interpretation, and Narrative (with Dr. Patrizia Pedrini). She teaches courses in ethics, bioethics, philosophy of art, and philosophy of mind at D’Youville. Her current research explores artificial intelligence and problems in the philosophy of art. In addition to her work in philosophy, she is a visual artist and explores philosophical themes, particularly those surrounding the mind and cognition, in her drawings and paintings.

Biography

Paola M. (Giacobbe) Kersch is an Associate Professor of Spanish, Director of World Languages and Cultures, and Academic Adviser of Study Abroad at ��Ƶ. Paola holds a BA in Spanish and English with a minor in the Classics from Canisius College, an MA in Comparative Literature from UNC at Chapel Hill, and a PhD in Hispanic Literature and Culture from SUNY at Buffalo. For over 20 years, Paola has taught courses in Spanish and Italian language, composition, and culture at numerous colleges and universities. Her scholarly work explores the child figure in plays and films about the Spanish Civil War and the Franco dictatorship and the response of contemporary female playwrights to acts of terror and domestic abuse. During her tenure at ��Ƶ, Paola has cultivated an interest in World Languages and Cultures among students, faculty, and administration by developing a World Languages and Cultures Minor, a BA and BS in Spanish, and a Spanish Medical Interpretation Certificate. Paola also strives to immerse students in the languages and cultures they study by securing new study abroad and internship opportunities and by curating a wide array of multicultural events on campus. Committed to the community, Paola has also served as an active board member of several not-for-profit organizations. In her free time, Paola enjoys spending time with her family, volunteering at the CCI of Buffalo, cooking, traveling to Italy, and in the summer months, gardening.
